| FFXI Japanese Language (Nihongo) Guide |
[04 Mar 2022|04:02pm] |
CLICK FOR: SHIGEMO's JAPANESE LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR FFXI
I decided to create my own guide to help others out there who want to learn and party with Japanese players. I've browsed the web for decent Japanese guides, and although many of them had useful phrases, most of them had mispellings and/or grammatical errors. In many cases, these errors changed the entire meaning of the intended statement. The funniest one I've read translated to: May I throw up in your party? (This was due to one mispelled word). So please be careful about what guide you decide to follow, even if it's from a well-known and reputable website. If possible have a fluent speaker double-check it.
A few thoughts on speaking Japanese in FFXI (or other MMOs)...
[1] Just because you have a list of words and phrases to use does not mean you can carry out a complicated conversation. So it's probably best to K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid). (A wonderful guideline I learned long ago).
[2] Japanese tend to use different abbreviations and slang that they would not use in RL (real life). For example, we say "LOL" - they say "W" which is short for warau (laugh). They will also string words together, and use alternative spellings for certain things. (More about this is elaborated in the guide).
[3] Expect Japanese players to be polite. I've heard people complain about this in my LS and on some forums. Personally, I appreciate people with manners no matter where they're from. If you can't handle it then play with rude people.
[4] Use the translator.
In the meantime I'll be adding more phrases or explanations as they come along. If you have any questions feel free to ask here or email me: kristy@shigemo.com.
[MINI-BIO on Kris aka Shigemo: I am half Japanese, plus Chinese and Portugese. I grew up in Hawaii which has a large Japanese population and an economy largely based on Japanese tourism. I've worked in retail and the restaurant business dealing with customers and co-workers who were from Japan. I also have friends and family from Japan and America who are fluent, and I've lived with some of them. I've taken about two semesters of Japanese in college. I can read and write hiragana, katakana, and some kanji. かんじはむずかしいですね~ I can understand more than I can speak, but one day I definitely plan to be fluent! ^_^]
[MINI-BIO on Leo aka Shigemo's editor:] Leo is my closest friend, who happens to be a bilingual Japanese-English speaker. He is nisei (second generation Japanese), and his first language is Japanese. He is the best resource I've found for my guide, because of his fluency in both languages. Many thanks go to him!]

| Listening to Japanese |
[24 Nov 2007|09:53pm] |
I've had a few e-mails in the past requesting that I add on sound to my site. Instead of doing that I've found some places on the web with audio files.
For example: http://japanese-phrases.sakura.ne.jp/
This site seems to be good. Easy to use, functional, and practical. As a side-note, it seems to focus on the polite version of Japanese, which is good to start with.
BTW, I recently re-installed everything into my laptop so it's been a bit troublesome updating my site. I'd like to focus on the links, etc, so hopefully, I'll get it set-up soon. If I get ambitious I might even add some video, although it is the holiday season which is always nuts.
Hope everyone had a good turkey day! <3 K

| I was AFK for a YEAR |
[17 Jul 2007|01:44pm] |
I probably should have announced some sort of AFK on the FFXI nihongo site. Honestly, I didn't realize my last job would take up so much of my time, but I quit recently so I have time again. FYI, even if I'm not updating, I will still continue to answer e-mails and check on the tag-board.
Since I quit (my last job), I've become more engrossed with J-doramas and whatnot, such as Hana Yori Dango, Liar Game, My Boss, My Hero, Bambino, etc. I'm trying to get back on track with remembering my Japanese, since I haven't used it much at all over the past year. >_<
Currently, there was a request for a printable version of the guide, which I'm working on I added, along with more links, and some edits! I've been collecting more resources and online answers for people that I'll put on the guide as well.
OK, Hope all is well! <3 K
OLD NOTES (from the site temp.):
July 16, 2006 - My good friend has started doing Japanese lessons on youtube.com. She was born and raised in Japan, and has been a teacher on and off through the years. So not only is she fluent in Japanese and English - she can teach! So if you are interested please send her a request or comment on her youtube site for more Japanese lessons. Alyssa's Youtube Site: http://youtube.com/profile?user=hapaloha
June 5, 2006 - Slowly making changes to the comments page! Added a 'links' section.
May 11, 2006 - Hey all, thanks for the suggestions! I'm working on another revision, but please be patient. A common problem I have is that people want translations for words that aren't originally Japanese (typically game terms). It's tough! update 6.4.06 - BIG thanks to James aka Yuenglyng on Valefor for being the first person to donate! It's really appreciated!
March 24, 2006 - Just got back from several weeks of traveling, and I received an e-mail about an e-guide being sold on E-bay.com that plagiarizes the work from this site and other FFXI FAQs. The links to the auctions are on my journal. Please, DO NOT support their plagiarism by buying these e-guides from ebay. Thank you! (I never want to charge people to view this guide. The only way I make a profit is if people click through my google ads or donate. Right now, it's not enough to pay for keeping this site up. But, if people keep using the info, and not ripping it off - it's all good.^^)
Feb. 17, 2006 - The phrase of the day is: "Jitsuha nihongo anmari shirimasen. "Shigemo's FF11 Guide" wo tsukatteru dakedesu." (Actually, I don't know much Japanese. I'm just using "Shigemo's FF11 Guide".) w
Jan 5, 2006 - Akemashite Omedetou! Happy New Years! Changes have been made! Most of these new changes were inspired by correspondences I had during my time in FFXI.
Nov 18, 2005 - I appreciate the acknowledgment and references to my guide on other sites, but please respect the legal disclaimer, and do not reproduce the guide on other web sites without my consent. Thank you.
2004 - Summer 2005 - I've been trying to keep updates about this guide on my livejournal. You can visit it [here] for more information.

[20 May 2006|05:05pm] |
I've been sick for over a week now. It's incredible. I hardly get sick and then BAM. BaaaaaaaaaM! sick.
I did want to announce my first donation to the site: http://shigemo.com/FFXI/nihongo_guide.html! From James aka Yuenglyng on Valefor. Many many thanks!
I've had the site up for about 2 years now, and only recently decided to put up some ads and a donation link. I wasn't sure I expected anyone to donate, but I will find some way to appreciate these people on my site. And thank you to anyone who clicks those Google links. I have no idea how they work, although I just realized I can't get any money from it until it reaches a certain amount. That kinda sucks, because the amount is fairly large - lol.
Anyways. I'm on antibiotics and feeling better. I've also been working on my freelance design whatnots, so it's pushing back my JP site upkeep. Well, keep sending in suggestions, questions, and comments (or use the comments page)! And stay healthy!

| Update on the E-bay Plagiarism |
[29 Mar 2006|05:26pm] |
The user, eguide01, seems to have taken his auctions down. is no longer a registered user. (I wonder why...)
The other user, gm2011, has additional sales now as well. For FFXI Final Fantasy XI Strategy & Gil Guides. Along with a Final Fantasy XI Crafting Tradeskill Guide.
Please do not buy into these gaming e-guides if they're not created by a legitimate company you can verify. Even then, you can get most (if not all) the information, tips, tricks, and hints you need off the web. In this case, the seller uses the same sort of sales points again and again for all of his gaming e-guides:
You are looking at the most complete strategy and $$ guide for... This is simply the best, most detailed and most complete... This guide tells you more information and secrets than any other guide. This guide covers all... This is the last guide you will ever need! These guides are updated 2006, please do not buy other seller's outdated guide.
Seriously, save your $4-10, and put it towards your next monthly fee for whatever you're playing. Or save it for a future game. If you have a question - look it up or ask someone on a forum like allakhazam. There are a ton of players out there willing to help you for free.
PS. Just because they claim to "copyright" their e-guides, doesn't mean they didn't take other FREE guides and FAQs off the web to suit their purpose. It is still plagiarism just to profit themselves.
Other e-guides being sold: Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2, Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Lego Star Wars, Animal Crossing, Dragon Quest VIII, Eve Online, City of Heroes, Dark Age of Camelot, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Kingdom Hearts II, Devil May Cry 3, Maply Story, Nintendogs, Pokemon Emerald Version, Gran Turismo 4, Star Wars: Battlefront, The Sims 2, Halo 2, Star Wars Episode III, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic

-Maple Story
Cute, FREE, little cut-out 2-D people MMORPG made by a Korean and I think Japanese company. Definitely has that Asian influence. It's the first MMO I've played in a while actually. I stopped gaming for several months to travel and work-out, etc. So this was a nice surprise. You have the same xp grind and other MMORPG features, but you can buy extra items for cash in this game. With $$$ you can change your hairstyle, features, winter wardrobe and so forth. I have yet to pay for anything, but there is a nice amount of items, and it's pretty adorable. It's actually better than other MMO betas I've tried in the past.
-Black & White 2
They've made changes from the original, although it generally looks the same - I like the creatures from the first edition more. I think they became too realistic? Game play was pretty good, and a lot of features have been made easier to use (follow-along).
-Sims 2: Nightlife & University
Sims 2 has been pretty fun so far. I get into it, then stop, get into it, then stop. I like the University add-on more than the Nightlife one. Doesn't really look like the college I went to, but then again I never had 50,000 simoleans to spend on a phat pad.
-World Championship Poker 2 I've always been a card playing fiend, but it's always just been with my family and friends. It's nice to practice. Although I'm too scared to play against Howard Lederer.
and PS. I updated the guide!

| Recent Japanese - English Site Update, (and a few recent pics) |
[09 Dec 2005|12:39am] |
MADE SOME CHANGES! (w00t!) Last night I revised the guide layout, and updated it. I'll actually be doing more changes, after I go through some of the suggestions that have been submitted. I do check my e-mail and read all suggestions, so feel free to submit them! Questions and comments are also welcome. There were around 20 changes made recently to the guide, most of which were based on a thorough e-mail sent in from a Japanese reader (former FF11 player).
I've also found around ten forums with copies of my guide pasted on them, with no acknowledgment to the source or permission of any sort from me. Even though those guides are old, and have outdated information, it isn't fair to other people who ask permission from me to reproduce my guide. The best site I've found dealing with online plagiarism is still copyscape, (http://www.copyscape.com/respond.php). Although it's easy to rip-off online work, I'd recommend contacting the author instead of risking copyright infringement.
OK. More updates around the corner. After printing Christmas cards of course. >_<
here's a pic of Leo (aka 'my guide editor') drinking boba in NYC
I have a ton of other pics from my recent travels, but I haven't sorted them all yet! I missmissmiss the East Coast weather! I know it's crazy cold now, but it's nice to have seasons! ^^

| Traveling Update |
[18 Nov 2005|01:53am] |
FYI: I recently returned from traveling for the past 3 weeks or so. I'm getting adjusted to normal life again, although for the next month or so I'll be fairly pre-occupied with family.
As soon as possible, I plan to:
(1) Revise the copyright document for the FFXI Nihongo (Japanese-English) guide. The current LEGAL DISCLAIMER is not emphasizing the significance of copyright infringement or fraudulent representation enough. I've found multiple reproductions of my guide on the web, where people tried to take credit for it. I'll need to emphasize in some sort of BOLD way that: The contents of this website, http://shigemo.com and http://shigemo.com/FFXI/nihongo_guide.html, may be not be reproduced under any circumstances except for personal, private use.
(2) Edit the FFXI Nihongo (Japanese-English) guide. There have been some suggestions and changes to be made which will hopefully improve the guide even more.
In the meantime... Please let me know if you see any reproductions of my guide on the web that appear to be unauthorized and unacknowledged by shigemo.com.
NOTABLE LINK: http://www.copyscape.com/
In other news... I plan to spend more time with my artwork, so hopefully I'll have more to release by next year. Hope everyone is doing well this holiday season! Be good to each other! <333

Phenomenal Woman
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size But when I start to tell them, They think I'm telling lies. I say, It's in the reach of my arms The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.
I walk into a room Just as cool as you please, And to a man, The fellows stand or Fall down on their knees. Then they swarm around me, A hive of honey bees. I say, It's the fire in my eyes, And the flash of my teeth, The swing in my waist, And the joy in my feet. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.
Men themselves have wondered What they see in me. They try so much But they can't touch My inner mystery. When I try to show them They say they still can't see. I say, It's in the arch of my back, The sun of my smile, The ride of my breasts, The grace of my style. I'm a woman
Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.
Now you understand Just why my head's not bowed. I don't shout or jump about Or have to talk real loud. When you see me passing It ought to make you proud. I say, It's in the click of my heels, The bend of my hair, the palm of my hand, The need of my care, 'Cause I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me.
I've always loved poetry. I was thinking about this poem, and just decided to post it. Maya Angelou can weave words together will beautiful skill.
Besides this, I've been insanely preoccupied with graduation business. It's finally over, so I can live again! (Although this will be one of my busiest summers everrrrr) Fun in the sun is calling... (I will attend to my sites soon too!)

old pictures from FFXI in collage form. =)
EDIT: Forgot to mention that yep - these are all people in my LS and we all know each other in RL. We're missing two or three other members, but I couldn't find any pictures of us all together. Everyone in our LS also knew Japanese to some extent. Some members were bilingual and others only knew some words and phrases. Some of us also spoke Spanish. One member is from Japan that we knew, because he always helped us out. He was also pretty fluent in English. Twas much fun. He would get his friends together with our friends for questin' shindigs.

| Creating a list for topics to update FF11 Nihongo Site |
[26 Feb 2005|01:54am] |
I'm slowly making changes to the FFXI Nihongo - English Site. I decided to list down some of the requests from previous e-mails that are being added:
"Am am learning Japanese"
1) "Can you pull?" 2) Pull please.
i wanted to ask if you could put the numbers in too
1. Damage Dealer 2. Subjob 3. Magic Burst 4. or (example: subjob = monk or thief)
a phrase, that just says that you don’t know Japanese
The most difficult of these requests, to me, would be adding numbers. If you've never experienced the difficulty of counting in Japanese, then check out this link and click through the "Numeral" section. You may notice they all have the same initial kanji (一、二、三、四、五、六、七、八、九、十), but they have different endings. When they're written in hiragana or roumaji, or spoken - it becomes even more difficult because of different nuances.
For the purposes of the guide, I think I may add some ways to count, basic info on telling time, months, days of the week, and days of the month. I'm trying to keep the guide relatively simple and basic. I'm also thinking of adding more verb conjugations, new vocabulary, and different sentence structures. All of which will be in the grammar section of the guide.
If you have any other suggestions please leave a comment or send me an e-mail! =)
Hope everyone is doing well. I've been getting sick lately (which is really unusual). I think it was a gift for my Valentine's B-day, lol. Speaking of which, I hope everyone had a nice VD! (Valentine's Day)

| Happy Holidays! |
[06 Jan 2005|03:19am] |
As with most seasons, I had my hair fixed. My cousin did the color and cut, and I got cheesy with the cam. (I LOVE messing with hair). This is the most dramatic I've gone in a while, so I decided to share.
( visuals )
The holiday season has been tres busy. I hope everyone else had a wonderful season! I haven't made changes to my site or to the nihongo guide recently, so I'm putting it into my schedule. I've realized that some people are using the nihongo guide as an introduction to Japanese. If this is the case, I'll take it into consideration and make more adjustments to the grammar section. I know someone wanted to see numbers, and such, so if you are interested please send in suggestions.
reminder: I also need to implement a FAQ into my site for clients, so it's easier to understand the web design process. Possibly add more art work as well.
end note: MY HOLIDAY GREETING! (a wee late)

[22 Nov 2004|05:01pm] |

Mind you, this isn't even the highest setting for the graphics. If anything, this is somewhere in the middle. But hello! It's gawgeous

| EQ2 Con't |
[16 Nov 2004|02:31pm] |
Soooo... I've been trying out EQ2. Fortunately, I was able to nab a DVD version and only had to install two disks. The graphics are amazing, but I'm still unable to determine the optimal settings for my machine. I think I need to buy another 512mb of ram.
So far, I've found it enjoyable, yet different than FFXI in many ways. For one, it seems like every other NPC in the game has a quest for me. The quests vary in difficulty and reward, but more importantly most of them also give XP, so it doesn't seem to take away from hunting time. Another difference, is that it seems soloing is a much more viable option. For certain quests, it is definitely better to group up but it's easy to find a group since many other will probably have the same goals you do. As far as I can tell it seems druids, shammys and summoning classes can solo more effectively, but I'm guessing anyone can solo.
One thing I noticed that I appreciated more in FFXI is that the mobs didn't so closely resemble animals I'm familiar with in real life. I happen to be a sucker for animals, so bashing sea turtles on the head is somewhat bothersome.
especially when they look like this:

On the other hand, I admire the fact that I can customize my toons appearance much more than FFXI. It's funny though, I still run into people that look like my toon, but at least there's a greater chance for variety.
yep, I used to look like this in EQ:

If anything I hope to tweak the graphics so I don't lag so profoundly in the cities. The lag can be incredibly bad, but hey - it is beautiful. I can't even imagine how this game would run on the optimal top-notch machine of the future.
